   FAQ's – frequently asked questions:

Q. Who are we?
A. We have been recruiting drivers for US companies since 1999. We have now placed over 450 drivers at seven trucking companies in 2001.  We are incorporated in the USA, and operate from New Zealand. We are also a licensed employment agency in New South Wales, Australia for New South Wales trucking companies.
All the trucking companies we place drivers with - have been approved by the Department of Labor, and by the Immigration Department in America. No person enters the USA without a valid work visa.

Q
. What will I be driving in America?
A. Top of the line, modern trucks. Large sized 60" to 72" sleepers. The Trucking companies give drivers top priority and the comfort of the driver is always utmost in their minds. The trucks have air ride seats, arm rests, cruise control, double beds etc. Most have satellite equipment, but you will have to purchase a CB, Television and fridge (optional). All trucks and sleepers are fully heated and air-conditioned.

Q. What trailer will I be towing?
A. Flat top trailers, fridge (reefer) vans or dry vans. 48ft - 53ft in length. Carrying anything from ice cream and vegetables to warehouse stock or car parts and building materials.

Q. How do I unload in America?
A. The carriers' pay money to 'lumpers' (guys that are paid to do this). All you have to do is back up to the docks at each end and the lumpers' do the rest. 30% of the time you just "drop and hook" the trailers. It is rare that you have to do much more than this, and if you do, you get paid extra. If you do any tarping, you are paid a tarping fee. Most of our companies are dry (general) or fridge carrying companies.

Q. Where will I be driving?
A. The American's like us because we are not fussy about where we have to go. You could be asked to drive across all 48 states to drop off the load, even Canada! Most of the time you will pass through at least five states to get to your destination.

Q. What do I need to take with me?
A. Travel light. Take a sleeping bag or quilt, sheet and pillowcase, and a minimum amount of clothes as there are washing machines and dryers at the truck stops. 1 suitcase and 1 hand luggage maximum.

Q. Travel Insurance?
A. Definitely. This is compulsory for your own safety. It covers dental & medical up to $250,000, and plane delays. We organize this cover for $150.00 initial deposit then US$17.75 via payroll deduction per week. Some carriers will offer their medical coverage for you, but you must take ours for the first 90 days, as the carrier policies have a 90-day wait for coverage.  US medical insurance begins at $22.00 per week.

Q. How do I get my visa?
A. When the carrier approves you we submit your passport and necessary paperwork as a group to the
American Consulate.  You are invited for an interview at the Consulate.  Every person has an interview to be issued a work visa. Your passport is returned to you in 7 to 10 days. When you receive your passport and visa back we can help you make arrangements for your departure.

Q. Am I allowed to work for anyone else in the United States?
A. You are permitted to work for the carrier who accepted you. If you leave, it is a condition of the visa, that the employer advise the Consulate who issued the visa, and the Immigration Service Centre who approved the petition of your departure. You will be asked to sign an employment contract as well as a policies and conditions of employment. We are very strict on this - or you may ruin the opportunity for many other drivers to go to America. Non Cancellation of visa can carry a $10,000 USD fine to all concerned.  The only time you can legally work for another employer is if the new employer has the same work visas and the INS allow you to transfer.

Payments

Each carrier has different pay rates. You will start at between .28 USD cents and .32 USD cents per mile. Current drivers are averaging 2500 to 3000 miles a week. One week you may drive 3000 and the next you may drive 2890. You pay American tax, and are paid in America by the carrier. You should receive your first pay within 2-3 weeks after you have completed your first trip then weekly after that. Each carrier is different and we will tell you the details of the carrier when we offer you a position.

Team Driving Opportunities Available:  Many U.S trucking companies have asked us for Team Drivers. Team drivers can be husband/wife, male/male, female/female or male/female.

If you are teaming with an experienced truck driver with over 5 years long-haul experience, most of our companies will take the 2nd seat driver with 6 months driving experience. Please call us for our criteria for 2nd seat drivers. Each company we work with has different hiring standards. We will place you with the most suitable company for your experience.

For drivers that have not been to the USA, we have CDL manuals and USA information available for you before you go.

Teams run more miles that solo drivers. Teams run between 4500 and 6000 miles per week. (Sometimes more.)
From Los Angeles to New York is 2824 miles and would take a team about 2 days to complete. Leaving enough days in the week to do a return trip.

The pay rate for teams start at .28 to .32 cents per mile split between the 2 drivers. Nashville Teams get .37 (split).
For example: If you covered 5000 miles for the week at .30 cents per mile, your pay would be $1500.00 usd ($750-00 usd each)

In the past these miles have been easily obtainable from the companies with most team drivers doing more.

Working in a team, has many good points:
Companionship
Cook while you drive instead of eating in truck stops
Make extra money
See the sites of America together....

GETTING MONEY HOME: If you need to get money home, the easiest way is with a bank telegraphic wire at $35-00usd, this gets to New Zealand in 24 hours (cost varies from bank to bank), or buy a bank cheque for $5-00 and post it home. You need a SWIFT CODE from your bank to wire funds home.  Take the SWIFT CODE with you to the USA.

TAX RATE:  The American tax rate is approximate to our tax rates. You do an American tax return and claim deductions/receipts same as you do here.  The US have a $38.00 "meal allowance" per day for Truckers.

UPON APPROVAL: When you receive your approval to work for the US Carrier, we then post you a package that contains travel information, an employment contract, medical insurance forms and a CDL (driver license manual.) It also has a check list of all other information we need from you. You send this check list together with your passport and appropriate fees to us.Do not give notice at your current job until the US Consulate has issued your work visa. As soon as you get your passport back - you tell us the best time you can depart. We try to have a group of drivers depart at the same time that is why we like to discuss your departure date with you.

ARRIVAL TO THE USA: Upon arrival to America - company representatives will meet you. Be prepared for a 10 - 14 day wait period before you can do your CDL.  This is waiting for your social number.  The first four days are to obtain your CDL; the next two days are company orientation. Then you go out with another driver for a week or a trip. As is, each carrier is different. For some carriers - it will be 7 to 10 days before you get your own truck. This time is used for orientation, classroom lectures and gaining your license. After this time you will be allocated your own truck and you go out to work on your own.

GOOD LUCK!
Truck driving in America is an opportunity to experience a different country's lifestyle and culture, and 95% of the drivers we have sent in the past - love the job, the country and the experience they are gaining. We know you will as well. When you return home we send you a certificate of service and a reference. Please give us a call when you get home. Thank you.
